A: A PRD solves the problem of a forgotten password for a local Windows user account. If users create PRDs for their local accounts before they forget their passwords, they can easily reset their passwords at any future time--provided they still have access to the PRD disk. Be sure to keep the PRD in a secure place so that no one but the authorized user can get to it.

The Password Reset wizard will request you to enter a new password and supply the PRD 3.5" disk. Behind the scenes, Windows will retrieve your PRD private key from the PRD disk and use it to decrypt the encrypted copy of your password on the local machine. The fact that you have supplied the correct PRD disk proves to the system that your request to reset your password is authentic.

My dad reset my password to my laptop so the grandkids couldn't get into it and forgot what it is. We're stuck on the login screen and don't have a reset disk... Laptops locked down! Years worth of pics and video's are on it and can't access them. Please help...

My daughter gave me her old laptop awhile back but she had no power cord for it so I got a cord and neither me nor her can remember the password and I have no floppy disk or anything it says I need please can someone help me reset this thing

First of all I would try the simplest route. There is an Administrator account that is created with every windows Xp install. At the login screen, hit alt+ctrl+del 2 times, it should give you another login box, it may have a user name already inside it. Delete the user name, and type, "Administrator" no quotes. Hit enter, and it should log you in with admin privileges. From there goto Control Panel > User Accounts and change the passwords to your liking.

Step 1: Since we are assuming that your Windows PC is locked and you do not know the password, the first step needs to be carried out on a different PC with internet access and administrator privileges. Step 2 : Download the correct version of Ophcrack Live CD from the official website to the second PC. Step 3 : Burn the ISO file to a USB or CD. To do this, you will need an ISO burning application. Now proceed to the next step of the password reset process. Step 4 : Remove the bootable media from the second PC and insert it into your locked Windows machine. Let the computer boot up from this media instead of the native Windows installation. This is made possible by the fact that Ophcrack itself contains a small operating system that can run independently of your Windows OS. In a few moments, you will see the Ophcrack interface on your computer. Step 5 : You will now see a menu with 4 options. Leave it on the default option, which is automatic. After a few seconds, you will see the Ophcrack Live CD loading and then the disk partition information being displayed as Ophcrack identifies the one with the SAM file. Step 6 : Once the process has been complete, you will see a window with several user accounts and their passwords displayed in column format. Against the previously locked username, look for an entry in the NT Pwd column. Step 7: This will be your recovered password, so note it down. You can now remove the Live CD from the drive and restart your computer. You will be able to login to your user account using the password that was recovered by Ophcrack. 2ff7e9595c
